The surprise is Salsa and belly
dance go really well together! How, you might ask. The
movements that are used in Belly Dance can be transposed to your
Salsa. Isolating parts of your body helps you get a better
understanding into how your body works, so in turn helps
movement within Salsa.
An example is hip circles.
Getting used to just moving this area frees up your lower body
to add that essential Cuban movement.
Undulations can be a
fantastic, sexy movement, if done correct of cou rse! This would
be used for your body styling.
Arms are used a great deal
during Belly Dance. Movement in the arm should not stop at your
wrist, but continue to the tips of your fingers. As in Salsa we
want smooth, graceful movements. Not throwing a welly!
I have been dancing Salsa for
ten years now, but i found something was missing , I was not as
smooth as I could be. So off I went and found a class in Belly
Dance.
I first came across a class at
a Pontins Salsa Weekender about six years ago as a taster.
At that time there were not any classes in the area where I lived. A
couple of years later one appeared! From day one I was
addicted. I now attend class two times a week.
There are two forms . One being
Traditional Cabaret, and the other Tribal. The Cabaret comes
from the Middle East and the other San Francisco! The first is what you would expect, with the sequinned outfits. The
tribal being dark and moody, with , as the name suggests, Tribal
clothing. The more you add to it the better!
I now take part in both forms.
I regularly perform in a
troupe, showing this wonderful dance and hopefully on the way
encouraging others to join. It has been known for me to teach
Cabaret on a couple of occasions!
If you are interested in trying
it out along side your Salsa, welcome to the Family. If not, you
don't know what you are missing!
Contact myself or go straight
to my source of information, my fantastic teacher Sarah.
